How To Get Oklahoma Learners Permit

You must be at least 15 years old to begin Driver’s Ed.

You must be at least 15 ½ years old to apply for your permit, and you may not begin your behind-the-wheel training until your learner’s permit is obtained.

To receive your learner’s permit, you’ll need to bring:

• Your parent/guardian
• 2 forms of identification (these are usually your birth certificate and social security card)
• Your social security number
• School letter/proof of enrollment or attendance at a secondary or vocational technical school
• Certificate of Enrollment for your Parent-Taught Driver’s Education course

At the DPS you’ll need to pass a basic written skills test and a vision screening exam. After that, you’ll be issued your learner’s permit, and you can begin practicing your behind-the-wheel training!

Make sure you’ve completed your required 55 hours of behind-the-wheel training with your parent/guardian!

When you go to apply for your intermediate driver’s license, you’ll need to take your road skills exam. Here are some requirements you’ll need to meet:

• You must have held your permit for a minimum of 6 months
• You should bring all of the same documents as with your permit:
  • 2 forms of identification
  • Your social security number
  • School letter/proof of enrollment

You’ll also want to bring your learner’s permit, and your Certificate of Completion for your Parent-Taught Driver’s Ed course.

• Make sure you have the registration and insurance of the vehicle you’ll be testing in.
• Bring your parent/guardian!

Once you pass your road skills test, you will be issued your intermediate driver’s license, which allows you to drive with a licensed Oklahoma driver over the age of 21, between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. After you’ve held your intermediate license for 6 months without incident, you will receive your unrestricted driver’s license!
